2023 International Hydropower Development Conference Explores the Future of Pumped Storage Hydropower

Beijing, April 18, 2023 - The International Hydropower Development Conference, held in Beijing, successfully concluded with a focus on the crucial role of pumped storage hydropower in building the future energy system. The conference, organized by the China Society for Hydropower Engineering (CSHE) in collaboration with partners such as State Grid Corporation of China, China Three Gorges Corporation and PowerChina took place under the guidance of the National Energy Administration of China and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
Themed"Pumped Storage : The Key Pillar for Future Energy System",the conference brought together over 230 experts and representatives world wide, who engaged in insightful discussions and exchanged valuable insights on the subject.
The conference was inaugurated by Mr. Xiang Haiping, Chief Engineer of the National Energy Administration of China, Mr. Zhang Ye, President of CSHE, Mr. Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA, and Mr. Roger Gill, President of the International Hydropower Association (IHA). They emphasized the importance of pumped storage hydropower in meeting the world's growing energy demands while addressing climate change concerns.
Distinguished guests, including Mr. Wang Xiaojun, Vice President of PowerChina, and Mr. Zhang Ning, Deputy Chief Engineer of State Grid Corporation of China, provided valuable insights during their speeches. Mr. Malcolm Turnbull, former Prime Minister of Australia and Chairman of the International Pumped Storage Hydropower Forum, sent his congratulations in a special message to the conference.
Throughout the conference, experts from renowned institutions such as Tsinghua University and the World Bank provided in-depth perspectives on the current status and future prospects of pumped storage hydropower technology. Research findings from the International Renewable Energy Agency's Innovation and Technology Center, presented by Mr. Roland Roesch, offered valuable insights into the transformation, challenges, and opportunities of hydropower
Featuring presentations were delivered by esteemed professionals on topics such as water and hydroelectric planning, global hydropower, and achieving high-quality development in pumped storage hydropower. Thematic dialogues witnessed engaging discussions among delegates from prominent companies and institutions, including Hohai University, Dongfang Electric Corporation, Harbin Electric Corporation, China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute (CREEI), General Electric, etc.
