Wu Wenhao Addresses 18th World Water Congress

Beijing, September 13, 2023-Mr. Wu Wenhao, Executive Vice Chairman and Secretary General of IF-CSHE, was a distinguished guest at the 18th World Water Congress in Beijing from September 11 to 15. He participated in a special session titled"Sustainability and a Water-Wise Energy Transition under the Dual Carbon Targets" and delivered a keynote address.
The session focused on key themes such as the new power system mode of renewable energy, Hydropower Powering the"Dual Carbon Targets"and "Belt and Road", Developing sustainable hydropower under a changing environment, and Water-Human-Economy-Ecology Wise Nexus. The session was moderated by Eddie Rich, CEO of the International Hydropower Association (IHA).
During his speech, Wu Wenhao highlighted a significant water management project in China that combines flood control, power generation, water transport, agriculture irrigation, and recreational water usage. This project serves as an example of integrated sustainable energy deployment, encompassing hydro, solar, and wind power. He underscored the imperative of leveraging water resources to achieve a sustainable energy shift. Wu noted China's remarkable advancements in renewable energy, including hydropower, solar, and wind energy, which have been instrumental in China's efforts to reach emission peak targets and carbon neutrality. He praised Chinese power companies for their contributions to renewable energy development, particularly in hydropower, and for advocating for sustainable energy practices. Wu emphasized the ongoing importance of hydropower in addressing climate change and advancing clean energy transformation. He concluded by advocating for a greater adoption of renewable energy sources to ensure universal access to clean water and energy while preserving the harmony between humanity and nature.
The World Water Congress serves as a key platform for global water policymakers, researchers, and practitioners. Organized by the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) since 1973, the congress convenes every three years in diverse locations worldwide. This edition marked the first time the conference was held in China. Hosted by the Ministry of Water Resources of the People's Republic of China in collaboration with IWRA, the event was organized by the General Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Planning and Design and the Chinese Committee ofIWRA. Themed "Water for All: Harmony between Humans and Nature," the congress gathered heads of international organizations, government officials, experts, scholars, entrepreneurs, and economists to exchange insights and experiences on various water-related topics.
