Wu Wenhao Attends the 7th Meeting of the Collaborative Framework on Hydropower of IRENA

Bali, November 2, 2023 - The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) convened its 7th meeting of the Collaborative Framework on Hydropower in Bali, Indonesia. The event saw the participation of key figures including Roland Roesch, Director of Innovation and Technology Center at IRENA, Malcolm Turnbull, President of the International Hydropower Association (IHA), CEO Eddie Rich, and representatives from chairing and member countries of the Collaborative Framework, along with delegates from over 40 organizations. The meeting, chaired by Roland Roesch, also welcomed Wu Wenhao, Executive Vice Chairman and Secretary General of IF-CSHE, who delivered a speech on behalf of CSHE.
The discussion at the meeting centered around pumped storage hydropower, with representatives from member countries engaging in talks on this crucial topic. Additionally, the event outlined the Collaborative Framework's work plan for the next two years, emphasizing strategic activities aimed at addressing challenges within the hydropower sector and identifying key focus areas. There was also a dedicated focus on the development strategy for hydropower within the context of achieving 100% renewable energy in the ASEAN region, aligning with IRENA's vision.
Wu Wenhao expressed appreciation for the invitation from IRENA and provided insights into China's recent advancements in hydropower, particularly pumped storage, alongside measures undertaken to meet "Carbon Peak" and "Carbon Neutrality" goals. He highlighted the robust policy support from the Chinese government for pumped storage hydropower, especially following the release of the "Medium and Long-term Development Plan for Pumped Storage Hydropower (2021-2035)" by the National Energy Administration of China. He emphasized the significant policy backing attracting participation from financial institutions and enterprises across various sectors, reflecting growing opportunities in the pumped storage hydropower industry. He also elucidated the pricing mechanism for pumped storage hydropower and suggested relevant strategies.
IRENA initiated the Collaborative Framework on Hydropower in 2020 to foster dialogue, cooperation, and coordinated action towards sustainable hydropower deployment in the global renewable energy transformation process. Since its inception, the framework has convened six meetings, attracting industry associations and banking professionals from over 100 countries. Currently, Canada and Zimbabwe co-chair the Cooperation Framework on Hydropower.
